Understanding Basket Strainers for Pipeline Purification

Apr 03, 2024

A basket strainer is a crucial filtration device widely used in oil or other liquid pipelines. Its primary function is to filter out impurities within the pipeline, ensuring the purity of the fluid flowing through and thereby maintaining the normal operation of machinery and instruments such as compressors and pumps. In this article, we will introduce basket strainers in terms of its structures, principle and Installation and Maintenance.

Structural Features and Components

The structure of a basket strainer consists of several components, including inlet and outlet connections, a strainer body, a basket, flanges, flange covers, and fasteners. These components work together to form a complete filtration system. The strainer body serves as the main structural component, while the basket is the critical filtering element, named for its unique basket-like shape. Flanges and flange covers are used to connect the strainer to the pipeline and ensure a proper seal. Fasteners are used to secure the various components, ensuring the stability and safety of the strainer.

Operating Principle

The operating principle of a basket strainer is simple yet efficient. During pipeline installation, it is common for some impurities to be introduced. Additionally, raw materials used in production may also contain impurities. As liquid flows through the basket strainer, impurities are collected in the basket. Over time, the accumulation of impurities in the basket leads to an increase in pressure drop and a decrease in flow rate. At this point, simply opening the cover and cleaning the basket restores the strainer to its normal operating condition.

Installation and Maintenance Considerations

When installing and maintaining a basket strainer, several points require special attention.

  1. Basket strainers are typically installed horizontally, with the inlet and outlet directions aligned with the arrows on the valve body to ensure proper fluid flow.
  2. After prolonged operation, the strainer may accumulate a certain amount of impurities, resulting in increased pressure drop and reduced flow rate. It is essential to clean the basket promptly to maintain the strainer's normal operation.
  3. When cleaning the strainer, care must be taken to ensure the stainless steel wire mesh in the basket remains intact to avoid damage or deformation. Otherwise, the filtration efficiency of the strainer may be compromised, and equipment damage may occur.
  4. If any damage or deformation is found in the stainless steel wire mesh of the basket, it should be replaced immediately to ensure the strainer operates correctly.

In conclusion, the basket strainer serves as a critical device for liquid purification in pipelines, offering significant application value. Its superior structural features and efficient operating principle ensure equipment stability and production safety. In future industrial production, basket strainers will continue to play a vital role, providing robust support for various industries' development.
