Troubleshooting and Maintenance of Soft Seal Gate Valves

Apr 27, 2024

Soft seal gate valves play pivotal roles in both industrial and domestic sectors. However, common malfunction issues can impede their optimal performance. From leakage at the packing to stiff valve stem operation, these issues necessitate prompt solutions. Below, we provide remedies for these common malfunctions to ensure the reliability and longevity of soft seal gate valves. Here are common malfunctions of soft-seal gate valves and their solutions

1. Packing Leakage

Packing leakage is a prevalent issue, possibly stemming from loose gland pressure, insufficient packing, or aging packing material.

Loose gland pressure: Tighten the gland nut evenly to resolve.
Insufficient packing: Add more packing material.
Aging packing: Replace with new packing, ensuring a staggered pattern during replacement.

2. Gate Plate and Valve Seat Sealing Surface Issues

If the sealing surfaces are contaminated or damaged, it can lead to leakage.

Contamination: Clean by flushing thoroughly.
Surface damage: Refurbish by grinding, if necessary, perform build-up welding and machining to ensure a flatness not less than 0.4.

3. Leakage at Valve Body and Bonnet Connection

Uneven tightening of nuts or damage to flange sealing surfaces can cause leakage.

Loose or uneven nuts: Re-adjust properly.
Damage to flange sealing surfaces: Repair as required.

4. Inflexible Valve Stem Operation

Stiff valve stem operation may result from overly tightened packing, improper packing gland position, or damaged stem threads.

Overly tightened packing gland: Loosen appropriately.
Improper packing gland position: Adjust to restore proper positioning.
Damaged stem threads: Repair after disassembly.

Soft-seal gate valves have simple structures, making it easy to identify issues once they arise. When problems are detected, prompt action should be taken for repair. Due to the straightforward product design, professional assistance is typically not required, and repairs can be carried out independently. By conducting regular inspections and timely maintenance, the lifespan of soft seal gate valves can be prolonged, ensuring their smooth operation.
