What is ISO 12944 ?

ISO 12944 is the industry standard for corrosion protection of steel structures using protective paint systems. Originally released in 1998, the standard was developed by representatives from key countries and companies involved in the protection of steel structures to create a mutually beneficial framework.

The standard provides guidance to architects, engineers, specifiers, applicators, and other parties involved in the application of coatings to steel. It consists of 9 parts, with key components covering environmental classification, protective paint systems, laboratory test methods, and test methods for offshore structures.

What's C5-M painting system?

C5-M is a level of coating defined by its anti-corrosive capacity according to ISO 12944. The previous C5-I and C5-M categories have been replaced by a single C5 category for harsh onshore environments, and by the CX category for offshore environments. The CX category is addressed in the new Part 9 of the standard.

Additionally, a fourth immersion category, IM4, has been introduced. This category covers structures immersed in sea or brackish water that are protected by cathodic protection. However, C5-M is still widely referenced in offshore project specifications.


   

How to prepare the painting procedure for C5 painting?

For harsh offshore service, coatings from AkzoNobel are often used, and valve manufacturers can follow their procedures and apply coatings from the recommended models.

All offshore systems must undergo 4,200 hours of cycling testing, which is equivalent to 25 weeks.
