Essential Cleaning and Maintenance Guide for Y Strainers

On this page
Y Strainer is a small device designed to remove solid particles from liquids. It plays a crucial role in various industrial and domestic piping systems by filtering impurities to protect the normal operation of equipment. Y Strainers are typically installed at the inlet end of pressure reducing valves, pressure relief valves, water level valves, or other equipment to ensure that the medium is cleaned before reaching the valves and equipment, thereby extending the life of the equipment and improving system efficiency.
Structure and Working Principle
The main components of a Y Strainer include a filter mesh and a casing. The filter mesh consists of a filter frame and a stainless steel wire mesh. The stainless steel wire mesh is selected to provide higher durability and corrosion resistance. During operation, the liquid passes through the filter mesh into the strainer, solid particles are retained inside the mesh, and the clean liquid is discharged from the strainer outlet. When the filter mesh accumulates a certain amount of impurities, the flow rate will decrease and the pressure will increase, at which point cleaning or replacement is necessary.
Cleaning and Maintenance Steps
To ensure the best performance of the Y Strainer and extend its service life, regular cleaning and maintenance are essential. Here are the detailed cleaning and maintenance steps.
1. Drainage Preparation
Close the chilled water inlet and outlet valves of the fan coil unit to stop the water flow.
Open the air vent valve of the fan coil unit and gradually discharge the chilled water from the system. When draining, the flow should be reduced from a large volume to monitor the status of the chilled water inlet and outlet valves.
2. Inspecting the Air Vent Valve
If the air vent valve does not drain, it may be due to blockage. You can try to flush out the dirt by opening the chilled water inlet valve.
If the air vent valve continues to drain, check whether the valve is closed properly, and tighten the valve if necessary.
3. Disassembly and Cleaning
Cut open the insulation layer of the Y Strainer and open the strainer's screw cap.
Remove the filter mesh and place it in a container for treatment. You can use the backflush method, which involves opening the chilled water outlet valve and flushing the filter mesh with the return water pressure until the water flow is clean.
After cleaning, close the outlet valve, reinstall the cleaned filter mesh into the strainer, and tighten the screw cap.
4. Inspection and Restoration
First, open the chilled water inlet valve to allow the air vent valve to vent until clear water flows out of the air vent valve, then tighten the air vent valve's vent screw.
Check for leaks at each valve connection point. If there are no leaks, restore the insulation layer of the Y Strainer; if there are leaks, repair or process and then restore the insulation layer.
Maintenance of Y Strainer Filter Mesh
The filter mesh of the Y Strainer is made of stainless steel wire mesh, which is a consumable part. In industries with high hygiene requirements such as food and water treatment, the maintenance of the filter mesh is particularly important. The stainless steel wire mesh needs special protection to prevent deformation or damage. Regular inspections of the filter mesh condition should be conducted during maintenance to ensure it is in good condition. The replacement of the filter mesh of the Y Strainer should follow strict hygiene standards to avoid contamination. Here are the detailed replacement steps.
1. Closing Valves
Open the front and rear valves of the spare Y Strainer to ensure the spare equipment can take over the work.
Close the front and rear valves of the Y Strainer that needs to be inspected or has its filter mesh replaced.
2. Disassembling the Filter Mesh
Use appropriate tools (such as a hook) to open the Y Strainer and remove the filter mesh support.
Place the disassembled parts and seals in a stainless steel disinfection box for cleaning and disinfection, then dry them.
3. Installing a New Filter Mesh
Remove the old filter mesh and check if the new filter mesh is intact and clean. Install the new filter mesh and ensure it is correctly installed.
Reset the strainer, check for any damage or foreign objects on the new filter mesh, and record relevant information.
Precautions
During cleaning and replacement, avoid damaging the stainless steel wire mesh of the filter mesh to ensure the performance of the strainer is not affected.
Comply with relevant hygiene standards during cleaning and replacement, especially for equipment used in the food and water treatment industries.
Regular inspection and maintenance of the Y Strainer can effectively extend its service life and improve the stability and reliability of the system.
After completing the cleaning and maintenance of the Y Strainer, ensure that all operational steps are carried out according to specifications, which can effectively improve the strainer's operating efficiency and extend its service life. Regular inspection and timely replacement of the filter mesh can maintain the stability and reliability of the system and prevent equipment damage or operation interruptions due to strainer failures. Additionally, adhering to hygiene standards during maintenance is particularly important for the food and water treatment industries, ensuring the efficient and safe operation of the filtration system. With careful maintenance and timely inspections, we can maximize the performance of the Y Strainer and ensure smooth operation of the piping system.
