A gate valve is a multi-turn valve used in pipelines for isolation, providing full open and close functionality. It operates by a threaded stem that moves the gate into two seats, blocking fluid flow. The seats are typically metal with hard facing, such as stellite (CoCrW) or stainless steel overlay, for extended durability, but can also be soft-seated for specific applications like water service. Compared to other shutoff valves, gate valves require less installation space. Their slow operation due to the multi-turn design helps prevent water hammer. They are commonly used in applications requiring minimal pressure drop and free bore and are suitable for various fluids, including water, oil, steam, gas, and slurry.
