A gate valve is a multi-turn valve designed for fully opening or closing flow in pipelines. It uses a threaded stem to move the gate into two seats, effectively blocking the fluid. The seats are usually metal with hard facing for enhanced durability, though soft seats are available for specific uses like water. Gate valves take up less space than other shut-off valves and their multi-turn operation minimizes the risk of water hammer. They are well-suited for applications that require low pressure drop and an unobstructed bore, handling fluids such as water, oil, steam, gas, and slurry.
